The Monster Exchange Project presents another season for K-8 Students
Monster Exchange Encourages Development
of Reading, Writing and Creative Expression Skills

New Hope,PA, October 1, 2001
-MonsterExchange.org, today announced the redesign and launch of the long time learning resource site, the Monster Exchange Project (www.monsterexchange.org). Monster Exchange is an interactive learning site that provides kindergarten - 8th grade students with a unique way to use the Internet to hone their reading, writing and creative expression skills. The project is designed, hosted, and sponsored by Brian Maguire, the Project Director and Founder.

"Designed by teachers for teachers, the Monster Exchange project began as a grassroots effort seven years ago," said Susy Calvert, a gifted education schoolteacher and coordinator for Raleigh County schools in West Virginia and Monster Exchange's volunteer administrator. "Since then the project has grown to incorporate many state and national curriculum standards and has empowered thousands of students from schools worldwide to tap into their creativity and develop their reading, writing and comprehension skills in a fun way."

Classrooms worldwide are paired together, and students from one classroom draw and write a description of a monster, which they exchange with their partnered classroom. The second group of students must then draw a monster that resembles the original monster, relying only on the written descriptions. Once this process is complete, all the monsters are uploaded to the Monster Gallery to compare and view.

The redesigned site retains the features that have long made it a success - including lesson plans and resources for teachers - while adding new ones such as chat rooms, discussion boards, and spotlighted classrooms and their monster drawings.

The Monster Exchange project is featured in the 2000 edition of Teaching with the Internet: Lessons from the Classroom by Donald J. Leu, Jr. and Deborah Diadiun Leu.
